Book Review: "Weakest Lynx" (Fiona Quinn)

What would your life be like if you could sense malignant forces? What if that sensory power made danger as palpable a presence as the smell of your morning coffee? What would you do with such a power?

How about try to survive?

Meet Lexi Sobado, an intelligence consultant who has secret semi-psychic powers that very few people know about, which is sometimes the only thing that keeps her alive. Recently married, she's on her own with her new husband on deployment overseas, renovating a new house. Somehow, in the midst of all that newness and excitement, she winds up with her own personal stalker. Just what she always wanted.

When the threatening notes keep slipping past her increasingly "secure" defenses, she turns to the one man she can trust to help keep her safe, someone she used to work with undercover. Problem is, she can't tell him who she is or about their past connection. Nothing like working to solve a potentially deadly case and juggling secrets at the same time.

Author Fiona Quinn presents the psychological and supernatural thriller Weakest Lynx, which promises to keep you turning pages late, late into the night.

The story is told from Lexi's first-person point of view, and being inside her head is a trip from the very first page ... which, conveniently enough, is precisely when the suspenseful tone of the entire novel is set. Lexi is a mass of contradictions designed to fascinate the reader: quirky and down-to-earth, courageous and nervous, practical and gifted with an otherworldly prescience that sometimes saves her life, and sometimes rips it right out from under her.

From the first chapter, readers will be on Lexi's side as she works feverishly to figure out who she can trust, and who is the increasingly creepy enemy stalking her from the shadows. Someone from her childhood? Someone affiliated with her husband's military work? Someone she once worked for, or against, in her time as an undercover operative?

Or someone else entirely?

The twists and turns this novel takes kept me right there, firmly grounded in the action, and just as afraid as Lexi of what was coming around the next corner. Unexpected, compelling, frighteningly real and wholly plausible, the story line zigzags from one unsettling revelation to the next, until the kind of unforeseen ending that will undoubtedly cause readers to pick up the next in The Lynx series.

If the cover of this thriller came with a label, it would read as follows ...

WARNING: The material contained within these covers may cause sleeplessness, insomnia, and shiver-inducing paranoia.

If thrillers, suspense, and the unknown are your cup of tea, look no further.
