Book Review: "Great Cake Decorating" (Erin Gardner)

If you're a creative personality, with imaginative or artistic hobbies, and you're looking for another hobby (or even something that might turn into a business), check out Great Cake Decorating by Erin Gardner, who was named the winner of Food Network's Sweet Genius.

Included are basic recipes for cakes, frosting, icings, and fillings, so readers have a firm foundation from which to start their experimentation, as well as lists of tools and equipment from decorating tips to dowels (for layered cakes).

Chapter 2 contains guidelines for using dyes to tint your frosting and fondant, how to work with fondant, and the tools and techniques you'll need to create flowers and to texture your creations.

Chapters 3-7 offer specific step-by-step "recipes" for beautiful sample cakes, from one simply decorated all over with frosting "pearls" to a patriotic design for the 4th of July to a flower lattice design (similar to the popular basket-weave design often seen on decorated cakes). The pictures are high-quality, and the instructions for each design are detailed, specific, easy to understand, and even easier to implement.

Gardner writes with warmth and specificity, encouraging her readers that cake decorating is just like any other creative undertaking. Bring your imagination and the willingness to make mistakes as you learn, and your creations will be just as picture-worthy as those of a professional.
