Did you ever hear some of the stories from the Bible? The Hebrew Old Testament, or the Christian Old and New Testaments, contain one account after another of the lives, choices, relationships, and journeys of hundreds of people.
How often do the same old stories get old after a while, though? How often do we skim past one or the other account because we've already read it a million times?
Maybe it's time for something new.
Timeless Tales: Bible Stories for Adults is a work by David S. Mayfield, firmly grounded in accounts from Scripture but told with a contemporary perspective on dialogue, plot, and personal application.
These are not your average Bible stories.
Mayfield revisits such classic accounts as the creation story from the book of Genesis and the fall of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. Other well-known Biblical personalities include Samson and Delilah, David and Goliath, Abraham, Noah, Moses, and Jonah, among others.
He not only underscores his storytelling with solid Biblical exegesis but also conveys, through careful questions, analysis, and opportunity for self-examination, the immediate applicability of the stories' meanings to modern readers. No longer is the story of Samson and Delilah, for instance, just applicable to the original audience; instead, even current-day readers have much to learn.
Mayfield writes with directness, honesty, perspective, grace, and studied wisdom. Nothing about the stories he selected to recount feels too familiar, like treading the same ground again and again, ad nauseum. Instead, he determined to freshen the scenes of these accounts, and he's accomplished it admirably.
When was the last time you had a chance to look at one of those old stories through fresh eyes, a renewed perspective?
Check out these unique, approachable takes on those traditional accounts. You won't be disappointed.
